TEXAS HISTORY BUFFS SHOULD ALSO MAKE A STOP IN JONES CREEK WHERE STEPHEN F. AUSTIN’S SISTER AND BROTHER-IN-LAW SETTLED IN 1832.

ORIGINALLY A PART OF PEACH POINT PLANTATION, FOUNDED BY AUSTIN’S RELATIVE, IT WAS THE SITE OF AUSTIN’S GRAVE UNTIL HIS BODY WAS MOVED IN 1910 TO THE STATE CEMETERY IN AUSTIN.  A PLAQUE IS PLACED AT HIS ORIGINAL TOMB.

OYSTER CREEK TAKES PRIDE IN A BEAUTIFUL CITY PARK ON FM 523, BORDERING THE CREEK FOR WHICH THE CITY IS NAMED. OYSTER CREEK ALSO OFFERS POPULAR RESTAURANTS AND A RELAXED ENVIROMENT.

FREEPORT MUNICIPAL PARK HOSTS FAMILY EVENTS YEAR ROUND INCLUDING CINCO de MAYO, EASTER EGG HUNT, KID FISH, ROTARY SHRIMP BOIL, HOLIDAY ON THE BRAZOS, A FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION ALONG WITH THE WELL KNOWN FISHING FIESTA HELD IN JULY.

ONE OF THE AREA’S MOST POPULAR EVENTS, THE FREEPORT HOST LIONS CLUB FISHIN’ FIESTA, IS HELD ANNUALLY IN JULY.  FIREWORKS AND FISHING ARE ONLY PART OF THE FIESTIVITIES.

ANOTHER BIG EVENT OF RECENT YEARS HAS BEEN FREEPORT’S ANNUAL SUMMERTIME BLUES FIESTIVAL IN DOWNTOWN FREEPORT WHICH FEATURES PLENTY OF TALENTED LOCAL AND STATE-WIDE MUSICIANS.

JUST A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD FROM FREEPORT IS 900 ACRES OF UNDEVELOPED PARK LAND ON BRYAN BEACH, WHICH WAS RECENTLY DONATED TO THE CITY OF FREEPORT BY TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE.  THE LAND WAS DONATED EXCLUSIVELY FOR TOURISM AND RECREATION.

THOSE WHO HAVE A LOVE FOR GOLF CAN ENJOY THE FREEPORT MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE.  THIS RENOVATED, 18-HOLE COURSE IS OPEN FROM DAWN TO DUSK SEVEN DAYS A WEEK.
